Client: iPill
Expertise: Medical Device Redesign, Secure Embedded Systems, Biometric Authentication, Human-Centered Design, App-Integrated Compliance
iPill came to Southwest Engineering Concepts (SOENCO) with a critical mission: to reimagine their patented opioid dispensing device—designed to safely administer medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) therapy in home settings. Their product already featured secure biometric authentication and automatic pill destruction, but they needed expert support to improve the industrial design, embedded system reliability, and overall user experience.
Our team was tasked with redesigning the physical form and embedded systems to make the iPill Dispenser even more secure, more intuitive, and more patient-friendly—without compromising the regulatory and security standards essential to controlled medication delivery.
Key goals included:
This project brought together our full range of capabilities across hardware, firmware, and UX design. Working closely with the iPill team, we focused on secure, user-centered innovation from day one.
We kicked off with rapid human factors research to ensure our design would meet the needs of a broad and diverse patient population. From there, we redesigned the dispenser housing to improve its in-hand comfort, reduce visual intimidation, and create a more intuitive user flow. We added status indicators and tactile feedback to support confident, error-free use—even in stressful or low-light situations.
Key development milestones included:
The result is a product that elevates both security and usability—a critical combination for treating OUD safely and effectively at home.
Our work helped iPill take a significant leap forward in transforming their device from early-stage prototype to production-ready system. The new design delivers on safety, usability, and compliance-readiness, supporting the company’s long-term vision of reducing opioid diversion and empowering patients in their recovery journey.
Key Features:
With the redesigned iPill Dispenser, patients can now safely access their treatment medications in a more intuitive and dignified way—while providers gain real-time insight into medication adherence and possible misuse. The product supports a new standard of accountability and transparency in opioid therapy, while reducing the administrative burden on clinicians.
For SOENCO, this project reflects our ability to deliver robust, secure, and human-centered solutions in the most demanding industries—where safety, reliability, and empathy must all work in tandem. It's a strong example of how we help visionary health tech companies bring powerful new ideas to life.
Without smart access control, everyday prescription bottles can become a major point of failure in at-home opioid treatment.
The iPill system was designed to support a remote-care model, giving patients and providers shared visibility into medication access and adherence.
Biometric authentication was central to the redesign, locking each dose behind identity verification to prevent diversion or misuse.
One of iPill’s core safety goals was to eliminate accidental access, especially by children or unauthorized individuals in the home.
From pharmacy to patient, iPill extends the chain of custody—ensuring medications remain secure long after they leave the shelf.
